SOLD OUT! That’s what happened on the Home Shopping Network back in August, during the debut of Melissa McCarthy’s new fashion line, Melissa McCarthy Seven7. People Magazine writes: “Her fashion line–available in sizes 4 through 28–provides women of all shapes and walks of life with something they’ve been clamoring for: choices.”
When I saw this issue of People Magazine it had special meaning. Why? Because the cover title reads: “How to Love the Way You Look, by Melissa McCarthy.” Not many people know this, but when Janna and I were deciding on a name for our book, our first working title was: LOVE YOUR LOOK. (We changed it after we realized LYL was a registered trademark for a plastic surgery center.)
I have been a fan of Melissa McCarthy since her early days on Gilmore Girls. She played BFF to the main character–the role was perfectly cast, because she’s the kind of best friend any girl would love to have in real-life. (It is reported that McCarthy and Sandra Bullock became great gal-pals while filming their movie,” The Heat”).
McCarthy was Oscar-nominated for her raucous role in “Bridesmaids.” And recently starred in the hilarious movie, “SPY,” with hunky co-stars Jason Statham and Jude Law.
But her role as the adorably-dimpled Molly Flynn, on the super-funny sitcom “Mike and Molly,” remains my favorite. She is the “everywoman,” struggling with weight, work, family dynamics, and relationships. Just like the rest of us.
Before McCarthy turned to comedy, she studied fashion in college. “I have always loved clothes!” she says.”But over the past few years getting dressed had become a chore for me, a daily reminder of all of my imperfections. Fashion, for the first time in my life, had stop bringing me joy. It was more about, ‘What will fit?’ and less about ‘What am I in the mood for?’ I also knew that I wasn’t the only woman who didn’t want a low-rise jean. No one needs to know what color underwear you’re wearing.”
The 5’2,” 45-year old, mother of two daughters says, “…if my clothing line, in any tiny way, can make women feel as amazing and powerful as they truly are, then that’s the real joy. Of course, filling my closet with really cute clothes so I can play dress-up isn’t bad either.”
“I’ve been every size under the rainbow and my sense of style never left me, but my options did. I say, ‘thank God’ we all come in different shapes, sizes, colors, and personalties.” –Melissa McCarthy
Thank you, Melissa, for bringing the fun back into dressing. You can be my BFF any day!
