Flowing fabrics and layers of texture. These are hallmarks of the boho chic look. Hippie, tribal, vintage, country romantic–whatever you call it, women of EVERY age can wear it.
Think of clothing in unstructured, flowy peasant styles and those with an ethnic flair. Go as wild or minimal as you want. There’s a boho style for everyone.
Just like a classic wardrobe, bohemian fashion has its own set of basic elements. If you’re ready for a free-spirited change, here are some tips for creating your own bohemian chic style.
Tops – Peasant-style or off-the-shoulder tops are building blocks for this look. Linen and cotton blouses are good options as they are soft and comfortable, and details like embroidery or ruffles draw the eye toward the neckline or the sleeves. Tunic tops are also a great way to interpret this style, since they can be worn long or short, depending on your preference.
Maxi Skirts – Flowy maxi skirts and peasant skirts are popular items for creating a bohemian look. Loose palazzo pants also work well. Look for details like lace, ruffles, crinkly fabrics, ethnic, or animal prints.
Maxi Dresses – Solid or print maxi dresses also work as a base for layers of texture and accessories that create the boho chic look.
Layers – Kimonos, denim jackets or shirts, gauzy toppers, vests, and ponchos can all be used as layering pieces to create the boho style. Velvet, tapestries, suede and textured fabrics are all good choices.
You can also layer loose-weave cardigans over tank tops or camisoles. Just be sure the toppers don’t add too much bulk, which can make you look larger than you are.
Accessories for the boho look might include: bold jewelry, fringed bags, colorful scarves, low slung belts, leather pieces, and necklaces with tassels.
Footwear – Good choices are neutral-colored shoes and boots for cooler weather. Leather and suede sandals for warmer days.
Fall is a great time to incorporate boho accents into your wardrobe. Especially in the South where it can be 60 degrees in the morning and up into the 80’s by afternoon. Layering is a must.
Don’t forget the hat if you want a true boho look.

Add a little whimsy to your wardrobe this fall. Make it eclectic. Make it interesting. Make it “quintessentially you!”

My current favorite is a colorful kimono with pom pom fringe. Over skirts or a maxi dress, with capris or jeans. It’s just so much fun!

I love this look. Thanks for posting all the pictures with the great ideas. I’ve started considering what I might need for my wardrobe this fall. I love fringe, denim, and the flowing skirts. This is such a huge help for me before I go shopping. I appreciate knowing there is someone who is really in the know about what is in for the season. Keep up the good work, girls.
Thanks, Cindy.
Take a good look in your own closet before making a trip to the store. You might be surprised at all the ‘boho chic’ pieces you have hanging around that you never considered putting together. I found a felt hat in my closet that I’ve had for years, and never even knew it would lend itself to the boho look! Ha.
