It is not unusual for me to travel for three weeks with only one carry-on. Here are some stylish items I always pack that elevate my ho-hum travel wardrobe to next-level chic. And they take up practically no room in my bag.
During the day while touring or sight-seeing, sporty or casual dressing is usually no problem. But sometimes a theatre performance, formal dinner, or special event warrants a dressier outfit. Here’s what I tuck into my bag that never fails to add a bit of sophistication to my look…but no bulk to my suitcase.
Everything fits neatly into a gallon size zip-l0c bag. (I usually use packing cubes, but wanted to illustrate size here.)
Long Pearls or Beads – I’m not talking about your grandmother’s heirloom pearls. I mean a string of freshwater or faux pearls or beads that can be worn long or doubled. Day or night. Even if you’re just wearing a t-shirt, putting on a string of beads or pearls creates instant panache.
STATEMENT EARRINGS –
Sometimes all an outfit needs is a pair of great earrings. Nothing expensive, but something a bit oversized that can add a little drama. (After wearing the same clothes for three weeks, a girl’s got to have a bit of drama. Don’t you agree?) And no need for a necklace.
A Lightweight Sheer Top
This lightweight ruffled blouse looks like silk, but it’s a polyester blend that doesn’t wrinkle. (I prefer off-white, but you might look better in white.) Wear with jeans, slacks, or a skirt. With a blazer, cardigan, or alone.
A Colorful Scarf (or Pashmina)
Packing a chiffon scarf is like packing a feather. Make sure to choose a scarf or pashmina in a a color that looks spectacular on you.
Whether you’re heading to a warm climate or a cool one, this accessory is unbelievably versatility. Take a look:
When you travel to an exciting place, it is fun to imagine you are on a fabulous adventure. You might even imagine you’re Grace Kelly driving through the French Riviera with Cary Grant. Grace wore a scarf, too.
And here’s how she tied that:
Pack a little glamour in your carry-on. You’ll be so glad you did. Bon Voyage!

I always pack scarves that match my outfits, but I usually manage to buy at least one as I travel. I’m usually able to wear it on the trip because it’s the right colors and they make great souvenirs and gifts. (I Love Grace Kelly! She always looked so “put-together” and classy!
Yes, Janet. Scarves are so versatile. Large, small, square, rectangular. They can completely change the look of your outfit and take up no space at all.
