Last week’s blog was all about vintage jewelry coming back into the style scene. I told you I had a shoebox full, dating back to the 80’s. And here it is! I asked readers to tell me if you, too, had vintage pieces (20 years old or more). I also asked if you would wear these accessories now? (For reference, I’m talking about fashion/costume jewelry, not fine or heirloom pieces.)
Notice my flower brooches, shiny gold chains, and very large earrings–many clip on.
When you pull out old jewelry, ask yourself a few questions
- Do you still like the piece?
- Is the metal too shiny or brassy?
- Is it tarnished, scratched, or broken?
- Is it too heavy for comfort (e.g., big earrings or bulky necklaces)?
- When was the last time you wore it?
In its heyday, was the piece considered classic or quite trendy?
Some items like pearls, stud earrings, hoops, and brooches stand the test of time, because they are classic. But, other things might have been super-trendy–only popular for a season–never to be worn again (like inexpensive metal, colored beads, faux crystals, etc.). Which brings me to my next question:
Has your style changed so much, you would definitely never wear the piece again?
These questions may help you decide whether to keep the jewelry or give it up.
Which brings me to my final query? What are you going to do with those items you no longer want? Are you going to stuff them back in your drawer (or shoebox)?
My co-author, Janna Beatty, sends unwanted or broken jewelry to an organization called BUSTED BROADS CHARITY. (CLICK HERE.) I had never heard of this charity before.
Busted Broads was started by two women (Jane Hall and Cathy Coralllo) who wanted to give back to their community. They take jewelry (and other items) and create something brand new, which they donate to various charitable organizations.
Here are a few of the things they have created using old, unwanted items:
They also collect corks, glue, glitter, etc. (You can find an entire list on their website). And here is the contact information, in case you decide to send your unwanted things:

Trying to decide what to keep and what to donate.
I do remember these pieces. I also remember Sue Ellen Ewing in Dallas.
Wow…those WERE the big days!

My favorites are the last two pictures with the brooches, tres chic! And blue is definitely your color!
Thanks,
I’m just not sure about these big earrings anymore. But, I do remember when I wore them and loved them.
Perhaps it’s time to donate.
