Yes, it’s convenient to order online. And the anticipation of a package arriving right at your door can even be a bit exciting. But do you ever miss the physical act of shopping–especially in a lovely boutique or specialty store? (Even better when accompanied by a good friend.)
These days, we sit in front of a computer and believe we can find something to wear while looking at a screen with a model wearing a size 6, and hope it will look the same on us. (When we shop online, it is imperative that we know our style and ourselves–our body type, our most flattering colors, our lifestyle preferences–or we could make some big purchasing mistakes.)
And mall shopping seems to be a thing of the past. Remember when it was such a fun experience to “plan a trip to the mall” and see a variety of stores and offerings. (Jewelry stores, shoe stores, department stores, candle stores, toy stores.) Heck, you could even go to the mall to get your ears pierced. Those were the days.
But, if you happen to know a boutique that carries a variety of styles, an “in person” trip may be totally worth it. For example, if you are shopping for a special occasion dress, you can try things on, touch the fabric, look in a full-length mirror, and get the opinion of a sales associate or friend (optional, of course). And you have the reassurance that if the garment doesn’t work out, you can bring it back to the store. (I still like that advantage.)
Recently my friend, Carla, and I visited Susan Marie’s boutique, a specialty store in our small town, and an ordinary afternoon turned into a unique shopping experience with personal service from owner Darla Reeder.
Darla knows her designers and could tell us about every brand in the store including JAG Jeans, Consuela, Brighton, Gretchen Scott, Joh, Simon Sebbag, and more. (We weren’t familiar with all these designers, but she was.)
Perhaps it’s simply the sensory experience of an exquisitely designed boutique that can put you in the mood for shopping.
Sometimes you’re not exactly sure what you’re looking for, until you actually see it. And in a boutique like this one, there is so much to catch your eye.
From beautifully appointed displays to sparkling lighting and elegant seating. Shopping in an atmosphere like this is an experience in itself.
Even if you don’t end up purchasing a thing–and shop owners understand that–visiting a lovely boutique has the power to take you out of the ordinary and create an extra-ordinary occasion.
Please comment below and tell us your favorite specialty shops and boutiques. We LOVE sharing!

I wholeheartedly agree that boutique shopping is the best, especially when shopping for something special or just for a fun experience. The personal service you receive is so helpful and sometimes the owner or salesperson will make suggestions that I might not have considered!
Ah, those were the days, Sherry, when you looked forward to a fun day of shopping with friends. The computer just doesn’t make that great of a companion!
Thanks for writing.
Thank you so much, Sharon, for sharing Susan Marie’s on Main on your blog. It means the world to me! Can’t wait to show you, your suggestions which I’ve implemented. Yay! Most graciously, Darla Reeder
