It’s Sale Time: Don’t Be Tempted to Buy Only “The Exciting”
January 25, 2018

When I shop, I am always tempted to purchase some ‘exciting’ garment to add to my wardrobe. But then when I get to my closet, I find I have lots of ‘exciting’ pieces that don’t necessarily go with anything else I own.

Do you have a closet full of mismatched garments?

While basics may seem boring, they are foundational for all your ‘exciting’ add-ons.

“The number one reason you can’t find something to wear is that you’re lacking the basics. It’s almost impossible to put together a chic outfit without the basics.  So tackle that first.” …Style Blogger Beth Djalali

A fashion look from July 2011 featuring chiffon dresses, silk shirt and red shirt. Browse and shop related looks. These separates are all individually very exciting, but they are all misfits. Do you have a closet full of misfits, but nothing cohesive to wear?

Recently Janna Beatty and I gave a presentation to the American Business Women’s Association. I acted as Janna’s model while she explained a concept from our book, QUINTESSENTIAL STYLE: Dressing is as easy as A-B-C (Accessories-Bases-Complementary Colors). I wore a navy top and bottom (base) and created 11 different looks simply by by changing my third layer piece and my accessories.

Don’t think of basics as boring. Think of them as building blocks for an exciting cohesive collection. Because once you have your bases, the fun really begins.

Take a look at this gray turtleneck and these gray slacks.

Kind of dull–yes.

Dull, but necessary.

This is the matching inside base that is the foundation for creating an infinite number of EXCITING combinations simply by layering.

For example:

Add any of these third layer pieces to your gray base. A third layer piece can be a sweater, vest, poncho, pashmina, jacket, coat, kimono, or blazer.

Relaxed, casual, professional, fun, romantic, cozy, sleek, warm. How do you want to look? It all begins with a versatile inside base. Your third layer piece adds the pizzaz.

Can you picture each outfit?

So while the sales are on…and they are definitely on. Be on the lookout for basics:

Here are more suggestions for inside bases.

These inside bases are the foundation for any third layer pieces.

An inside base can be any color…navy, black, white, ivory, gray, red, pink. You get to choose what looks best on you.

Don’t find yourself with a slew of  ‘exciting’ pieces in your closet that won’t pair well with other things you own. Think basics first, then go hunting for exciting third layer pieces to add.

And don’t forget the ACCESSORIES.

A dear friend of mine recently gave me this coin purse. I had to laugh when I read it. Then it hit me– it can be so true!

What I have noticed as I’ve added some cardigans as my third piece is that they create a vertical line which is visually slimming. That’s always a plus for me!

Sharon, we absolutely loved yours & Janna’s presentation at the ABWA. It was unbelievable how many outfits you created with your navy blue base.

    Lita,
Janna has been teaching this ‘capsule’ wardrobe technique for years, and it really works!

    Judy,
I am always tempted to buy only the ‘cute’ stuff. I also needed a reminder that basics are our building blocks.
    Thanks for writing.
