My Prediction for Meghan Markle’s Wedding Gown
May 10, 2018

On the morning of May 19th, I’ll be up before dawn–brewing my tea exceedingly strong. I’ve been invited to a Royal Watch Party. The attire: hats and p.j.’s.  Is anyone else as excited as I am?

I was 22 years old in 1981. I remember sitting beside my mother on the sofa, in the living room. Waiting with bated breath to see Lady Diana Spencer step out of a shimmering carriage at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Her dress…a pouf of ivory silk and ruffles.

1981

Thirty years later,  I sat in my own living room, with a group of friends. We saw Prince William of Wales wed beautiful British commoner Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey. Kate’s V-neck lace and long sleeves–the epitome of classic perfection.

2011

In one week we will have another royal wedding. The world will watch and bid joy and happiness to England’s Prince Harry and American-born Meghan Markle.  It’s likely Harry will be wearing a traditional British uniform, or perhaps a morning suit (formal daywear consisting of a tailcoat, trousers, top hat, and tie or cravat).

But what will Meghan Markle wear? Just for fun I am making a prediction based on Megan’s past sartorial choices.

Meghan’s Style

If I had to use three words to describe Meghan’s style, they would be: Modern, clean, sophisticated.

Meghan Markle rehearses for her real-life role as ‘princess’.

No doubt Meghan realizes the royal wedding photos taken on May 19th will live on forever. Think about Grace Kelly. I wasn’t even born when she married Prince Rainier of Monaco, over 60 years ago. But I can still visualize their wedding portrait.

Grace Kelly weds Prince Rainier III, in 1956.

What dress will Meghan choose?

If I had to guess–and of course this is pure conjecture–how Meghan wants to feel on her wedding day, I would say: elegant, romantic, comfortable. That being said, here is my prediction for Meghan’s big day:

Ivory, off-the-shoulder (or boatneck), 3/4 length lace sleeves with slight embellishments on skirt, and more on the bodice.

As for Hair: Up, with a slight pouf. Smallish earrings and a diamond tiara–of course.

Picture her as a brunette. (Maybe a little more hair pouffed at crown.)

When it comes to a wedding, everyone should have fun. And when a Royal Wedding comes around, we can all have fun pretending we’ve been invited!

And WE get to wear our pajamas!

Please let us know your plans and predictions for the Royal Wedding…we may not see another one for a very long time.

I think your choice is lovely. It “suits” her personality and style. Good choice!

    Just a guess, Melanie.
Kate wore a deep V-neck and Pippa wore high neck and cap sleeves. I think Meghan will opt for her own quintessential style. Can’t wait to see it!

I think you’re spot on! It has to be ivory because she’s a divorced lady. I lived in Chicago when Diana and Charles got married. I remember setting my alarm so I could watch the wedding. Now, thank goodness for DVRs!! I’ll watch it when I get up around 9:00 and sip on my Starbucks coffee, that Carl would have gotten for me! 🙂

Yes, Hilde. Thank goodness for DVR’s. A royal wedding is fun to watch anytime!

    Ha ha, Jill,
If the wedding starts at 6 a.m., it may be over before he begins. Just tell him it will be a l-o-n-g ceremony!

Misha Nonoo, a fashion designer, is one of Meghan’s best friends. Looking at Nonoo’s web posts, I am willing to bet that the dress will be flowing, and simple, but with some really special details.

    Betty,
I looked up Misha Nonoo–sophisticated and stunning. It will be fun to see how American designs will be integrated into Meghan’s wardrobe choices, as she lives the British life.

I’m guessing it will be radically different. Like a mermaid or “fit and flare”. Looking forward to it. Since the wedding is at Windsor castle, are they still planning a balcony scene at Buckingham palace later?

That’s a good question, Janet. It would be quite a long drive to Buckingham Palace from Windsor (22 miles). As for the dress–I’m sure it will be demure and dignified as well as stylish.

You were pretty close! The neckline and sleeves were very like that, although not lace.

Judy, I thought she might go for romantic lace, but true to her style, she stayed with a beautiful streamlined look!
    Thanks for writing.
