For the past year, I have not written a single blog on travel. The reason is obvious. But now that we are chomping at the bit to hit the trail, let’s review a few tips on packing that your foggy brain may have forgotten.
Packing a Hat
I recently traveled to the beach by plane and did not want to deal with carrying my straw hat–which was not foldable–onboard. Here’s how I packed it so that it
You will discover your hat takes up no extra space this way and remains perfectly intact every time.
Travel guide tip: Pack pajamas last (on top), so when you arrive at your hotel dead tired, you won’t have to rummage through the entire suitcase to find them.
Take advantage of your shower cap.

Here are a few things you can do with a shower cap:
Avoid Overpacking
The tendency for women to overpack seems to be universal. They always fear they might need something they didn’t bring.
Years ago, my brilliant co-author, Janna Beatty, devised a Packing List with tips on how to avoid this common problem.

If packing more than one suitcase, put underwear and “good” clothes in both. I took a trip to Australia and only one of my bags came with me…the second one went to London. For half my trip, seven days, I was wearing KMart Australia clothing. The bag was found four days into the trip but travel time and a day in customs in Sydney, plus delivery to me in Port Douglas took three days. Learned my lesson. BTW, the airline blamed American at DFW for the mixup.
Terry,
What a GREAT tip! Sorry you had such a bad experience. But, thanks so much for sharing your advice with all of us.
Thanks for the great travel tips, Sharon. I dislike packing for trips and it stresses me out, LOL. I’ve gotten better over the years.
Lita,
Your note surprised me since you are a clutter removal expert. I thought, for sure, you would know how to cull down and travel light!
I hope you find some exciting adventures to pack for this summer.
I am a huge fan of packing cubes. I usually fold clothes where the center of a top has a fold on each side. (It will be in thirds). Fold that in half and then roll them up. I stack the rolls like a package of hotdogs. Then I can see every item of clothes in each cube. When I arrived at my final destination on a recent trip, I placed all my packing cubes in a drawer. Each night before I went to bed, I would pull out the outfit I would be wearing the next day and hang it up so that the wrinkles (if any) will fall out over night.
I usually only pack 1 or 2 pairs of slacks and I fold them on the center crease, then fold them in half. I put them on the very bottom of my suitcase. The packing cubes go on top of that. Bras go in the corners with the empty part of the cup facing the the interior of the suitcase.
My suitcase has 2 wheels at the back of the bag. I have learned to pack shoes (stuffed with socks) in the end with the wheels. I also pack anything else that is heavy at this end. This places all the weight at the bottom of the suitcase and my bag won’t tip over when it is standing up and rolls easier.
YES, Janet,
Why didn’t I include packing cubes? I love them, too. Especially when you are moving from place to place and have to pack your bag quickly. The cubes keep everything tidy and organized.
Thank you for reminding us!!
