Style Lessons Learned from Nature
May 29, 2019

spring flowersSpring is busting out! You might even have to shield your eyes from all the vibrant majesty surrounding you. But don’t look away long. There are style lessons to be learned from nature, if you just pay attention.

Go ahead…mix color.  You cannot deny these color combinations stun.

If you look good in one color and you look good in other color, try wearing those colors together. BAM!

Nature mixes brights together all the time, and so does Ralph Lauren.

Pick your palette. Go gentle or bold, or somewhere in between.

Don’t be afraid to Deadhead

Look at this pitiful geranium. Pretend this plant is your closet. Yes, your closet. There are a lot of fine flowers here, but you can’t see the good stuff, because the ‘spent’ blooms are in the way. Is it like that with your closet?  Is it time to weed out those garments that are fillers, not thrillers–like these wilted blossoms?

Just imagine what your closet would look like if you simply dead-headed all those outfits you no longer love, can’t fit into, or those that are just plain boring?

Why not keep the best of the best in full view. Clothes that you can wear NOW. Clothes that make you feel fabulous.

And never underestimate the importance of color: The eye is drawn to it.

Look at this photo. Where does your eye go?

Color gets oodles of attention. And as my co-author, Janna Beatty,  says:

“Color is the first thing seen, and the last thing remembered.”

I think this hummingbird and butterfly would totally agree.

Another great blog. Short, to the point and just what some of need to hear to get us into that closet and clean it out.

    Beverly,
Isn’t it true, we have so much stuff, we have trouble seeing all our real gems!

Love these color combinations taken from nature’s examples. And the analogy of deadheading one’s closet is genius.

    Molly,
I confess, I cannot take credit for the analogy. My co-author, Janna Beatty, gave me that example and I have never forgotten it. It certainly came in handy for this blog.

Sharon, As a huge proponent of “dead-heading” you have inspired me to do the same with my closet. This is the week! Also, I always told people that all colors look good against green. Nature gave us that combination and there are so many colors of green. Love the floral pictures especially the “forget-me-nots”. I actually saw some growing in nature last summer and it was such a thrill for me!

Sharon – I am enjoying a quiet afternoon catching up on many of your blog posts. I have been out of commission for some time with an ill relative. I LOVED this post and your comparison to dead heading the wardrobe! Great way with words! I hope you are well and I look forward to getting caught up on your posts and being more current! xo Elaine
