You don’t have to limit yourself to that same old box of holiday sweaters you wear every season. Go straight to your own closet to shop for new outfits–without spending a dime. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to remix and update pieces you already own. Here’s how:
- Think outside your usual Christmas box
- Go to your own closet.
- PULL OUT EVERY GREEN, RED, METALLIC, SHINY, AND PLAID THING YOU OWN.
Look for festive colors and fabrics. (Even alternate shades of red and green will work, for example: chartreuse, maroon, wine, etc.) Be imaginative. Combine pieces in ways you never have before.
Add a large green (or holiday plaid) satin bow to the waist of a red dress or skirt.
Tack a ring of marabou or faux fur, or add jewels around the neckline of a jacket, sweater, or poncho.
Pile on the bling. Instead of wearing pearls, wear all your pearls. Rather than one bracelet, wear an armload. Got several holiday brooches? Wear two or three together.
Think plaid. Plaid is less formal, but still a seasonal favorite. Wear denim, plaid, and a Christmas brooch. Or tartan with a puffer vest and jeans.
Don’t think your outfit has quite enough pizazz? For instant glamour:
- Try lace, fishnet, or patterned stockings to transform your look.
- Wear an additional coat of mascara on your upper/outer lashes, and brighten your lips accordingly.Or better yet, ROCK the RED Lipstick!
Your closet should be the first place you shop for holiday outfits. ‘Tis the season to shine. Pile on the jolly and have fun creating your own festive looks.

Fun! this engaged me. I must go look in my closet and wardrobe and jewelry box!
Donna,
It is so tempting to go out and buy “new” for the holidays. But if we really scour our closets, we can usually find plenty of festive outfits if we just use a little creativity. And they don’t always have to include ‘sweaters.’

I agree with Donna McMullen. What a fun thing to do. I look forward to getting into my closet and re-coordinating my outfits for the season. Such a good idea when spending money on others at this time of the year.
Cindy,
Let us all know what you find. Can’t wait to hear all about it!

Cindy,
A good friend pointed out one other item to look for in your closet–VELVET! How could I forget.
