What is “Coastal Grandma” Style?
May 9, 2022

Fashionistas everywhere are loving Coastal Grandmother Style. And you don’t have to be a grandma to love it! In fact, the phrase was coined by a young 26-year old California TikTok influencer named Lex Nicoleta.

When Lex Nicoleta coined the term “Coastal Grandma Style” on TikTok, the expression immediately went viral.

What is Coastal Grandmother Style?

Think Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep, and Martha Stewart relaxing at home (or on a movie set) and you can probably peg this laid-back aesthetic.

Diane Keaton is coastal chic in “Something’s Gotta Give”
Martha in her garden.
Meryl Streep in a scene from “It’s Complicated.”

I have heard the style described as “mature luxury.” The simple lines, sophisticated fabrics, and neutral or monochromatic colors lend themselves to quite a timeless flair.

Elements of CG

The elements of Coastal Grandma happen to be several of the elements I wrote about in my last blog titled Australian Summer Style: A Season Ahead. (Those Aussies really are ahead of the style curve.)

  • Natural Fabrics/Linen
  • Uncomplicated lines
  • Geometric/unfussy accessories

Think: sand and water, light, white, cool blues, and fresh neutrals.

How to Get the Look

  • Linen dresses/skirts/pants
  • Chinos or khaki cropped pants
  • Loose trousers
  • Denim dress
  • Flat sandals or canvas sneakers
  • Whites mixed with light tan
  • Straw bags or large canvas tote
  • Simple jewelry or beads
  • Sheer, lightweight kimonos
  • Chambray
  • Button-down shirt for layering
  • Oversized neutral knit cardigan (for cooler days)
  • Sunglasses
  • Straw hat or bucket hat
Don’t forget the hat!
Or your straw market tote.
Anne Hathaway (certainly not a grandma), shows off her Coastal Grandmother Style.

You don’t have to live on a beach–or be a grandmother–to wear this classic, easy style.

Maybe you are already a Chic Coastal Grandma–and you didn’t even know it!

Tell us what you think about this look. Would you wear it?

    Wanda,
I believe you can find many of these pieces at stores like Chico”s, J Crew, and Banana Republic. Basics like khaki cropped pants and cotton buttoned-down shirts are also available at Dillard’s.

    Laura,
    I love it, too.
    Casual but very chic.
I mean, who doesn’t want to look like Diane Keaton?
    Thanks for writing.
