Recently, and quite by accident, I discovered that given choices, most of us REALLY DO KNOW OUR OWN QUINTESSENTIAL STYLE–and can choose the perfect garment quickly, even if only allowed a few seconds.
I attended a cooking class with a few close friends. Before the class, we were all instructed to choose an apron from a large selection hanging on the wall.
I thought nothing of it, until the class started and I began looking around the room.
Sure enough, the ladies had chosen aprons that truly represented their own style. It was evident to me, but did they know it?
Carla chose a colorful, bold, sunflower apron that perfectly typifies her buoyant personality. And, since she is from Kansas, she reached instinctively for the state’s flower: the sunflower.
Sharon chose a sweet, pastel patterned apron, complete with embroidered birds and a bow. If you imagined this lady to be kind, generous, and friendly, you would be absolutely spot on.
Vivian (left) is a no nonsense, straightforward gal. (She was formerly a school superintendent, you see.) She reached for a simple, neutral, one-piece apron with large pockets in a very durable canvas. She liked it so much, she exclaimed that she was going to go home and make one for herself.
Violet (right) has a sophisticated, colorful style. Her choice mimicked her chic elegance. Never fussy or contrived.
I had never met Tiffany before. But, I surmised by her coloring that she was a Contrast Color Type (a black and white gal). When asked, she said she did wear a lot of black. I inquired whether she carried a black handbag. She answered ‘yes.’ Why do you ask?” “Because black is the color of your hair,” I answered.
Judging by her stylish, put-together look, it is no wonder this lovely lady reached immediately for the black and white striped apron out of all the other choices.
I have known Gail and Carol for years, and it did not surprise me a bit when Gail chose a neutral striped apron, since this stylish lady loves clean lines and very little pattern. Carol, on the other hand, said she, “had to have the polka dots.” Since, as you can tell by her sequined, pumpkin top, she simply exudes sparkle and fun.
A few years ago, I wrote a blog titled “What Does Your Cell Phone Say About You?” I discovered that our style is reflected in every choice we make, even when choosing something as simple as a cell phone cover.
My theory was confirmed when I saw the apron choices these ladies made. Consciously or subconsciously, it is evident that we know ourselves and our style better than we think!
Have you ever had to make a choice quickly and later you discovered it was a very good one? Or have you ever made a poor choice because you thought you would follow a trend instead of your intuition?
Please let us know. We love hearing from you.

Great Eye, Sharon! So interesting that it s a Fast, Natural Choice- we must just “gravitate” to color !
I agree, Carla.
Sometimes we have to trust our gut…and it is usually right!
Thanks for participating in this impromptu experiment!
