By definition, inaugural means to mark the beginning of an institution, activity, or period of office. Every 4-8 years a new commander-in-chief is sworn in. Consequently, a new era in style/fashion begins at the White House.

It was impossible not to see images of the inauguration at every turn last week.

But, how do you choose what to wear to an event that is broadcast worldwide, with photos that will be cemented into the archives of history? It must be a daunting task.

For men, the decision is easy: dark suit, white shirt. And a tie: either red, blue, or a combination of red and blue. Voila.

Comb your hair, Mister, and you’re done.

This, of course,  is why dressing is so simple for men. But ladies, we cannot deny that a man always looks attractive–not to mention powerful–in a suit.

But women have so many more choices. So what style lessons can be learned from the ladies at the inauguration? Here were a few of my takeaways:

Let’s begin with Melania Trump. Perfection in powder blue. This monochromatic look definitely has the SS factor: SOPHISTICATED and SLIMMING. (Although Melania needs no help in the latter category.)

It can’t be easy to stand next ex-model Melania, but Michelle Obama did not do herself any favors by wearing this tweed dress and matching coat. The texture of the ensemble added visual weight to the normally svelte-looking former First Lady.

Pantsuits were popular at the inauguration. As mentioned above, one-color dressing is not only slimming, but  instantly creates chic, classic style. Both Ivanka Trump and Hillary Clinton opted for white. (Even white can be slimming when it is worn head-to-toe.)

Remember, white is a neutral, so it is important to add color to the mature face or one could appear washed-out.

Hillary nails it with her choice of a pretty pink lipstick.

However, many first ladies prefer to save white for evening.

Some chose to take the occasion quite literally.

For others, styling was subtle–yet fabulous–using a focal point to create huge impact.

Jill Biden looked stunning in fuchsia. THE CORRECT SHADE AND CLARITY OF COLOR can bring  luminosity to your entire appearance.

You can tell that she feels great in what she’s wearing.

Wow!

Sally Preibus (wife of White House Chief-of-Staff Reince Priebus) looked amazing in a navy coat with red scarf. But the highlight of her ensemble was a brilliant and elegant brooch.

To recap ideas taken from last week’s Inauguration:

• Monochromatic looks (head-to-toe, one color) are slimming and sophisticated
• Too much texture can add visual weight
• White/off-white dressing is always classic
• Color is the magic age-defyer
• A focal point can really make you stand out

So when you and your outfit are about to make it into the annals of history, choose wisely. And if you really want to steal the show, just reach for a clear rain poncho.
