Have you seen the newest trends in tunics? They are called sharkbite tops, because it looks as if a shark just took a big bite out of the middle of the shirt.
There are even extreme sharkbite tops.
Similar to the sharkbite is a style known as the handkerchief hem.
These stylish tops create a fun, flirty look. But if you carry weight in your hips, you should know that the lines in these garments may not be the most flattering. As you can see, if the longer sides of the hem hit your hips at their widest point, the hem can actually make you look larger all the way down.
If you are not worried about bringing attention to your hips, then, by all means, go for this cute style. But if you have reservations, another alternative is the asymmetric-hem tunic.
There are also triangle hems. I love the tops below.
So check out all these different styles. And remember, the important thing to note is where the hem hits you. Because the hem creates a visual line, and that is exactly where your eye will be drawn.
P.S. If you decide to wear a triangle-hem top, just make sure the triangle isn’t pointing to something you don’t want it to.

What wonderful tips on the “shark bite” tops. I love the look and liked the hints about the different shapes.
Nothing can compare to your visit to the Victorian shop in however.
Keep up the good writing!

Carol K., Thanks. Yes, I really loved featuring the Victorian Cowgirl Shop, and owner, Candace Walters. If you are ever in Sedona, you’ve got to meet her.
great tip about where points point!!
Yes, Carol. Something to consider…right?
Thanx for the tips! I’m shopping online for a dress for our Daughter’s adoption day & a lot of the dresses were sharkbite or assymetrical hems. When I looked at the sharkbite hem, it almost reminded me of a bell shape. I am a plus size woman, with larger hips, so I wondered if this would be flattering… Umm… No. Lol!
Melissa,
I also have larger hips. You have to be careful where the ‘bite’ hits. When you put it on, you will be able to see if the line is flattering. Thanks for writing.
I love sharkbite tops and think they look lovely on larger women. As long as the middle/higher section sits below the belly, they actually slim the torso as they have a ‘bodycon’ Effect where the edges fall, leaving a thinner central focus. Squarer tops have a harsh edge at the bottom, emphasising anything which isn’t flat.
