I’ve noticed a fashion craze that has literally been going “in and out” of style lately. It’s the half-tucked blouse. And, ladies, you might be surprised how this trend can help you look longer and leaner.
While on a shopping trip to Austin, I visited two of my favorite stores: Chico’s and Talbot’s. In both stores, I noted mannequins wearing half-tucked shirts. Take a look:
So why
The first time I ever saw this concept was on my friend Judy McLane’s website, Harmony Designed. Judy demonstrated the half-tuck in this photograph.
You can use the same technique by knotting the front of your shirt and leaving the back long. Take look:
It’s hard to tell from this photo, but the blouse is tied in front and left untucked at the back.
And, on the other end of the style spectrum, men are suddenly “untucking” their shirts. There’s even an entire brand called
“Un-Tuck It.”
Fashion may be confusing, but at least you can’t say it’s boring!
Please let us know your thoughts on tucking, tying, and untucking. Would you do it?

I never thought about a half tuck for myself. I just saw it as a fashion trend for younger women. But I will try it. Anything to look a little more slender! Thanks Sharon.
I know, Cindy. Me too.
But once you see how flattering it can look, it may be something you’d like to try.
What about a full tuck? Personally, I think the half tuck makes one look thick around the middle when it is so blousey 🤔
Yes, Leslie, if you don’t want to bring attention to your tummy a tuck might not be the best idea. But, a loose tie can actually conceal a protruding tummy if tied strategically below the waist. (see photo above)
I like this & have tried it, but have issues with the way my pants fit and either can’t keep it in or, don’t like the way it looks.
I have LOTS of material in the back as well. Are there more comments about blouse styles? I noticed your comment about men’s shirts. Sizing seems to be an issue for me.
Kay,
The fit of the shirt does certainly matter, as does the weight of the material. I have found that lightweight jersey tees and cotton button-downs work well. But you are correct, you don’t want a lot of extra fabric in the back. In fact, the Chico’s mannequin is actually clipped in the back, because there is extra fabric.
I have never liked the half tucked style! I want to hide my stomach, not show it off! And tying a knot at my waist is not flattering either! I’m obsessed with the high/low tops with points on the sides! I think that style is a lot more flattering even though it doesn’t make me look taller! Hilde
Yes, Hilde,
The look is not for everyone. And, yes, if you have a tummy–you probably don’t want to add any extra bulk. You may want to try the loose-tie look, with the knot just above your hipline–as shown in the photo above.
I like the demo when you drawing the line giving the longer look. I am 5 ft 2inches . I always like to look taller. I to will try the half tuck.
Thanks for sharing.
Barbara,
My friend, Judy, is also petite. She finds the half-tuck helps her look taller!
I have noticed that some of the button-up shirts that I have purchased lately seem to have very long tails (even on me and I’m long waisted). So, I have done a full tuck just because it seemed to look a little dressier and the back of the shirt-tail isn’t hanging below my cardigan or jacket. I might try the half tuck or hip tie. What do you suggest if you’re wearing a cardigan or jacket? My jean jackets are very short.
I had to giggle when I saw the title. I thought about what would happen if you said it 3 times real fast. Gotta be careful!!!
Janet,
I think designers have concluded that women like a little more coverage in back. Try a loose tie in front, for a modern twist…if you dare! (Haha, I had the same thought as I was typing that title!) Thanks for writing.
