Where to Find the Best Design Ideas for Your Home
July 8, 2026

While some people think mail order catalogs are simply junk, I love them! Why? Because they can be a source for all kinds of great decorating ideas. While my favorite magazines include Southern Living and Traditional Home, I find lots of design inspiration from catalogs. For example, Ballard Designs. Within each catalog, I discover a multitude of concepts I can use in my own home. (Without actually purchasing anything.)

FOCAL POINT: TRAYS

Create a focal point in any room using trays. Take a look at the way Ballard Design designers have styled these coffee tables using trays, platters, and flat baskets. They are the perfect bases for any and every theme. And keeping items contained, instead of spread out, gives greater visual impact. The look is more intentional.

SYMMETRY

Not everything has to be symmetric in your house, of course. But, you can get an IDEA of how your mirror might look flanked by two sconces and four pictures (as pictured below). Or simply two chairs, or two identical candle sticks.

ASYMMETRY

You can even get an idea on how to decorate without symmetry, as pictured here:

THE RULE OF THREE’s may apply…or maybe even a rule of Four’s???

AND THEN THERE ARE PILLOWS…can we ever have enough?

But, which fabrics and patterns? What size? And what is the best way to arrange them? Never fear, pillow placement ideas abound.

WHAT ABOUT ALL THOSE LITTLE TCHOTCHKES? (pronounced Chotch-kees)–meaning all those small accessories? Like trinket boxes, and larger boxes, and tiny vases?

EVEN TABLE SETTING IDEAS. In these photos I discovered an unusual napkin placement and found that a simple basket of tomatoes adds a huge burst of color to a table.

Because I know the photo shoots prepared for catalogs like Ballard Design are done by professional home stylists, I feel as though I’m stepping into a design show home every time I open one.

You can also find a multitude of ideas on styling clothing and accessories in clothing catalogs (and online). Discover what necklace shows better with which neckline or which shoes go best with an outfit similar to one you might own.

You will also become more proficient at discovering what you don’t like. Which will save you time and money in the long run.

Remember, the ideas are FREE. You can learn to become your own best stylist!

Thank you to Ballard Designs for the photos and the inspirational tips!
