For several years, I’ve been foregoing resolutions and opting for a singular ONE WORD to guide my thoughts and direction for the new year. But, for some reason, I’m struggling this year to come up with a word for 2021.
Thinking back, here are my ONE WORD(s) for past years:
2018 – Focus 2019 – Grace/graciousness 2020 – Flow
Wow, thoughtfully evaluate the year that has just passed. Here are a few words that come to mind from last year:
Virus, quarantine, social distancing, masks, protests, job loss, death, shelter-in-place, ZOOM, COVID testing, lockdown, isolation, personal protective equipment (PPE), flattening the curve…
(Most of these words, I’d rather forget.)
Need more suggestions:
I have to ask myself what I’ve learned from the events of last year. What reflections have I taken away? How have I handled the disappointments and developments of 2020?
How do I want to feel at the end of 2021? How can my ONE WORD guide me to reach this goal?
I’m still working on my word for 2021.
Can you please share some of yours? I need some inspiration and I can’t think of a better audience to ask for help.
I sure love my readers.

Thank you for leading us in this exercise! My one word is “Be”
Les,
What a multi-faceted word. So simple, yet so complex. Just whispering the word “BE” forces one to take a breath and become still.
Thank you for writing.
The word(s) that come to mind to me for 2021 is Persistent or Persistence. With all of the craziness going on in the world today we have to just keep plugging along the best way that we can.
Lita,
You are so right. We must persist. If not, we will simply shrink. Better to face the day–whatever may come. And in doing so, we may just discover gratitude, kindness, and strength we never knew we had.
My word is Trust. I feel like there is so much uncertainty in the world right now with Covid, new president, new vaccine’s and new rules regarding how we live our lives. I just have to turn my life over to God. He will take care of it. There’s very little of anything that I can control right now. My phrase for the year comes from one of my favorite hymns:
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
Trusting in Him for 2021
Janet,
I know everyone in this wide world can relate to the events of the day. Just because it’s a new year, doesn’t mean all our troubles will disappear. The word “TRUST” can guide every thought and action. And, I’m sure–by the end of the year–your FAITH will also be increased, because of your simple act of trusting.
These past several months has given me time to explore new hobbies, new recipes, reading, etc., however, at times I find myself somewhat agitated with the situation. This causes some anxiety and thoughts that are not always a healthy way to interact. I’ve chosen PATIENCE as my word for 2021 and when I feel a bit stressed, I repeat it to myself as a silent chant. So far, it’s working.
Catherine,
What a grand word for the new year. “Patience” is such a simple word, yet so complex. It implies endurance, longsuffering, and perseverance. Brava for choosing such a profound and valiant word.
My focus word for 2021 is “breathe”. George Floyd, those who died of Covid, and my sister who died of a pulmonary embolus just before Christmas are no longer able to do that, but I can. So, I will inhale, exhale, and be thankful for every breath. Meditation gurus advise us to “just focus on our breath”, letting everything else go for a while, in order to clear our minds of distractions and focus on what we need to do.
Betty,
What a thought-provoking, multi-dimensional word that contains so much personal meaning.
I am very sorry for the loss of your sister. Your “one word” is a beautiful tribute to her memory.
Thank you for sharing.
