When you receive a mail order catalog, what’s the first thing you do? Throw it away? HOLD ON! Those catalogs offer free gifts. Here’s what I got from Neiman Marcus. And I didn’t have to spend a dime.
Mail order catalogs offer valuable Style Ideas, at no cost to you.
Retailers pay stylists big bucks to coordinate outfits for the models in their catalogs– revealing ways to wear the most current, on-trend fashions.
Before you pitch that catalog in the recycle. Scan the pages and focus on the way professional stylists have put together their models. You can learn a lot.
Chances are good that you have similar garments and accessories in your own closet you can combine in the same way.
Here are some style ideas I gleaned from the latest Neiman Marcus sale catalog:
Nest Your Necklaces
Find complementary metals and layer your necklaces. Begin with three. Make sure they are spaced at different lengths to create the greatest impact.
Have fun experimenting with necklaces you have.
It’s okay to combine different textures and sizes. The reason this works is because these three necklaces are all in the same color family.
Stack Your Bracelets
We all have more than one bracelet. Try stacking several for a signature look.
Add a Hat for a Boho Look
Ears Only
If you have a lot going on at your neckline, skip the necklace and opt for earrings only.
But be sure those earrings make the statement you want.
Be Unpredictable – Avoid Matchy-Matchy
You can’t really tell in these photos, but this necklace has a purple stone. It is a completely unexpected complement to this yellow twin set.
Think outside the jewelry box. Things don’t always have to match.
The next time you need fashion inspiration, you could go to the store and pay $5.99 for the latest StyleWatch magazine. Or you can get FREE inspiration from mail order catalogs and discover ways to create your own signature look. The choice is yours.
It only goes to prove:
IT’S NOT WHAT YOU LOOK AT—IT’S WHAT YOU SEE.

Thanks so much for this! I’m just now learning to layer and this posting has really been helpful.
Glad to help, Janine. All we have to do is watch the stylists to get plenty of inspiration!
What a great idea, Sharon. I love browsing through all those retailers’ catalogs for their latest selections, but I haven’t stopped and paid attention to how they’ve put different outfits together. You’re right — so much inspiration right in front of us from professional stylists — and it’s all FREE!
Thanks so much!
Judy,
Pinterest is another source for sartorial inspiration, but why not just find ideas in your mailbox?
