The Pantone Institute has just announced the official color for 2019 is CORAL. You know, that luscious shade that falls somewhere between orange, salmon, and peach. What does your mind conjure up when you think of coral?
A release from Pantone reads: “Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment. It is an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.”
I always wonder how they read so much into a color. (And why it takes them a whole year to decide.)
However, not all corals are created equal. Here’s a coral chip chart from Sherwin Williams:
As you can see, there are bright corals and not-so-bright corals, corals with brown, pink, and yellow undertones. Some shades of oranges might even be trying to horn in on all ‘coral’ sensationalism. (Shame on you, ORANGE!)
I happen to love coral…if it’s actually the color I think it is. I looked on my Color 1 Color Chart to confirm exactly what shade of coral I look best in. And here it is:
I received a color consult and a Color 1 Color Chart from Janna Beatty several years ago, and I cannot begin to tell you how many ‘color’ mistakes it has helped me avoid. And how much money I have saved in the process. My chart has paid for itself one hundred times over.
My chart stays in my handbag and goes everywhere I do. I consult it before I buy clothing, accessories, makeup, lip color…well, everything.

Sharon, in my opinion I believe paying $200 , for the average woman , is a bit too much to pay to find the right color to wear. The way I try a color, is to place the garment under my chin and if the color reflects back under my chin, it’s not for me. For example, YELLOW is definitely not my color. RED is my color.
Keep the suggestions coming. I look forward to reading your blog.
P.S.
Sharon, CORAL is also a good color for me.

Candice,
Before I wrote Quintessential Style, I thought every woman (even me) instinctively knew her best colors. But I was wrong. I found out I made plenty of color mistakes when I opened my closet and saw so many outfits I’d bought but wasn’t wearing. After I had my colors done, I realized WHY those colors weren’t working. (Some shades were too dull, some were too pale, some too saturated.)
Lucky you, if you can see that a color works or doesn’t work for you. Many people can’t. I couldn’t.
Now I have a chart to guide me.
But, I bet you REALLY can wear yellow, if it the right clarity and shade for you.
Thanks for writing, friend.
I’m so glad I was able to do my color analysis with Janna. I had a ton of clothes that I had purchased and under the fluorescent lights of the store I thought I looked ok. But in my home I just never felt good in them but was never sure why. Janna spelled it all out for me with the right color, texture and print. Ivory is not good on me and I had a lot of ivory. I’ll never forget the blush I was talked into purchasing at a prestigious store actually looked like dirt but after putting on the right color my face lit up. Along with my beautiful coral lipstick.
I too carry my color chart with me in my purse. It has saved me many times from wasting my hard earned money. FYI – I hate to return things. Thanks again Janna and Sharon for the fun blogs!
Lori,
Thank you for being our poster child for COLOR. Hundreds of women have had the same revelations about color after being charted, but YOU allowed us to tell your story. Later, you told me, ‘Discovering COLOR changed my life.’
I truly believe it.
