My co-writer, stylist Janna Beatty, would be quick to tell you she owns more accessories than she does clothing. She says, “To me, clothing simply sets the stage–it is my canvas. Accessories create the real art.”
“I like to refer to accessories as ‘necessaries’.” … Janna Beatty
If you’re like me, you probably own plenty of clothes. In my case, I will admit to owning too many. In this new year, when so many resolutions revolve around organizing our lives, our bankbooks, and our closets, take time to consider how you can cut your clothing wardrobe, but still maintain your style. How? By accessorizing.
I recently attended one of Janna’s Open Houses at UR Makeover Studio in Waco. Lovely friend Diane Jordan, who is an accessorizing expert, demonstrated how to completely change the look of an outfit simply by wearing different Sets of Accessories.
“A set of accessories is a combination of accessories that relate well to one another, either by color, mood, texture, style, or print. Together, these pieces make a good team and present a cohesive look.” …..Quintessential Style (page 53)
Accessories include jewelry, hair ornaments, hosiery, scarves, belts, shoes, shawls, bags, even eyewear.
Diane’s monochromatic gray base is the jumping-off point for adding accessories that will reinvent her look:
But wait! She’s not done yet.
Thank you, Diane for showing us six different looks created from just one inside base. You are the ‘ace of accessorizing.’ (Note: The colors used here are intended for a Gentle Color type (like Diane). Discover your color type on page 22 of QUINTESSENTIAL STYLE.)
Of course you may not want to get rid of all your clothing. But consider how easy it would be to pull out one garment and have fun trying on an entire boutique of accessories right from your own closet. Accessories chosen by you–especially for you. Now that’s personal style.
“If an accessory is very ‘you,’ it will give you decades of wearing pleasure.” …Janna Beatty

Martie,
Janna has been teaching this technique to her clients for years. But when you have someone come and actually show you how it’s done, it can really help jolt you into action in your own closet.
Thanks for writing.
Sharon!
What a fun day! I’ve got to refine the presentation but you condensed this so well. What an excellent writer you are. I love accessories!!! And the possibilities with one base are endless- dressed up and down with accessories!
Great blog. Thank you for the lovely compliments on something I love to create – new Outfits!!
Diane
You made my job easy this week, Diane. Thank you for showing us that it’s not about ‘the amount of clothing we own’, it’s about how much versatility and value we can get from our wardrobe when we accessorize.
Loved what Diane did with the same base outfit. I also love the layering she demonstrated. It is great eye candy.
Yes, Cindy. Diane is a pro at layering scarves with necklaces. She says she just plays around until she gets it just the way she wants it. All the jewelry she wears is from Janna. It is custom-designed for her particular color type.
Thanks for writing.
