Does it seem that the pandemic is dulling our sense of imagination when it comes to dressing? How can we get the creative juices flowing again when it comes to creating great looking outfits?
The answer is as simple as a click of the computer and a short walk to our own closets.
I have discovered that many of my favorite retail websites have “Style Guides” or “Get the Look” pages to give us non-creatives a little boost when it comes to pulling outfits together. For example:
Talbot’s
The TALBOT’S website has a “Life and Style/Lookbook” page that teams separates in chic, interesting ways. Click here to view. Here are some examples.
Create your own “Winter Pastels,” “Alpine Divine,” or “Plaid Tidings,” with items from your own collection. (Boy, I wish I’d thought of those impressive titles.)
Chico’s
Chico’s website has a “Get the Look” outfit inspiration page. Click here to discover stylish ideas. Then find similar items in your closet.
A ruffled, ecru blouse–formal or casual.
The idea is to find style inspiration from these websites, then search out “like” items you already have–from your own closet.
Got a great tweed coat?
Halsbrook
Halsbrook’s website offers a sophisticated clothing line and shows you how to wear it. Click here to see their “Style Guide.”
But, you don’t have to go out and buy any of these garments. Just go to your closet and see if you have similar items that will work to achieve the same look.
It’s all about shopping in your own closet, where I’m sure you possess a trove of lovely garments and unique accessories. Use them to create your own spectacular “one of a kind style,” using inspiration from experts!

Love these examples Sharon!
Thank you, Yvonne.
Even in the midst of all this uncertainty, getting up, getting dressed, and getting out to help others seems to be the best way to share the joy of the season right now.
It seems insensitive to post info from sites that feature expensive clothing, even if we are supposed to shop from our own closets. People are really hurting. This trivial stuff offends me. Can’t you think of anything more empathic to the tragedy we’re all in the midst of?
Dear Edith,
Thank you for writing.
The goal of my website and every blog I write has always been to present choices to women. Ideas that might inspire them, enlighten them, or just make them laugh.
If this offends you, please unsubscribe. Because I find that those women who are confident, strong, and happy are also the ones who are most willing to share their time and their treasure with those less fortunate.
I especially enjoy my monthly Talbots catalog and agree it helps with putting outfits together. I also agree that their titles are quite clever!
Thank you for the post about turtlenecks last time. That inspired me to check and see if I needed some new ones for winter. I ordered two from Talbots and they just arrived. Many thanks for inspiring me to keep up with my wardrobe!
Sherry,
If we can keep our spirits up for just a few more months, we will get through this. Having a few fun outfits to turn to can help us feel a bit more festive. You’ll be ready when the floodgates open and we can all reunite! Brava!
When I do look through my closet, I also rediscover many items pushed to the back that I have forgotten. I then remember when and why I bought them in the first place. In addition to adding to my wardrobe choices, such memories help me get rid of that “shut in” feeling we are all experiencing. I really enjoyed seeing several color combinations I have never thought of before. Maybe I’ll be daring and pair up separates in different ways. Thank you for the suggestions.
Sharon,
It’s easy to forget what we have in our closets from season to season. Now that the weather is getting colder, you might discover many garments you have forgotten about. Have fun pairing unexpected pieces together.
I love your blog & have found it so helpful for me and by sharing so many of your tips with my friends. I’m sorry that Edith looks for the “doggie downer instead of the puppy uppers” in your blogs.
Shirley
Shirley,
I certainly respect Edith’s opinion. No doubt, these last few months have been dismal. But life hasn’t been canceled and neither has hope. I believe it’s helpful to get up, get dressed, and discover some way to help.
