Ladies, Remember Lace, Bows, and Flounce? Throwback to the Eighties
October 13, 2021

We’ve all heard the expression: “What goes around comes around.” And that could never be more true for styles this fall. On a recent trip to Dillard’s, I couldn’t help notice a few things that took me back 40 years.

Lace Collars

Lace collars are everywhere. And if a garment doesn’t have one, simply add one. (Does anyone remember the crocheted collars we added to all our tops in the ’80’s?)

Bows

Whether it’s a velvet jacket, OR a casual sweatshirt, BOWS seem to be the thing this season.

Collar Detail

Unmistakably feminine detailing.
Ruffles don’t have to mean formal. Mix your ruffles with casual jeans. Wow.

Collar AND Bow …remember this?

The iconic sheep sweater, worn by Princess Diana in 1981 is available today.

This model probably isn’t even old enough to remember the original. Now it’s vintage!*

*Most antique dealers consider an item to be classified as “vintage” if it is more than 40 years old.

Do You remember these styles? Did I get you excited? Or would you rather forget them? Please comment below and let us know!

I love bows and lace and anything feminine. I have a family picture of me in a blue silky blouse with a bow at the neckline. I loved that blouse. I’m reminded of Nancy Reagan. She wore the bow neckline of the 80’s. She always looked poised and feminine. Bring on the bows and the collars.

    Janet,
I’m with you. I love the flounce. I might not be able to wear it like I did in the 80’s, but I will find some way to tweak it to fit my style today.
    Thanks for writing.

I am definitely not a collar and bow person! I love the white blouse though!

    Hilde,
Some gals follow the trends (come what may). It’s exciting to see someone who knows herself so well. You can pass on a style you know is not “quintessentially you.”
(And of course you love the white blouse, Hilde. You are a contrast color type–your signature is black and white!)

I’m with you, not a collar and bow person either but love the white blouse especially since it’s a V neck.

      Lita,
It’s great to know what you like (and feel comfortable wearing) AND it’s just as important to know what you DON’T like.
Sounds like you know your “quintessential style” pretty well!

I’m not the fluffy lacy type. Sweaters and jeans for me.

I wasn‘t into this style either, but I did have a favorite ultra short semi formal dress that my momma made me in 1970…she must have been ahead of the 80’s styles. 😀It was made of velvet in a deep turquoise color and was a shift like dress and had long sleeves. It was for a Christmas Dance my sophomore year in high school. Because it was a solid color and had such a simple style, Momma used beautiful lace to adorn the scoop neckline and the cuffs of the sleeves. I felt so very elegant.
Guess I really did not actually address your question, this article did remind me of a beautiful memory and my even more beautiful mother. Thank you.

    Sharon,
I’m so glad this blog brought back the memory of a garment you felt “absolutely wonderful” wearing. And remembering that your mother made it especially for you is even more wonderful.
    Thanks for your comment.
