In 2018, I introduced my readers to a new concept in resolution-making. It was NO resolutions. Instead, consider one single word to guide your thoughts and actions for the entire year. What might your word be for 2019?
Statistics differ, but it is estimated that only 8% of folks end up keeping New Year’s resolutions. You know what that means? About 90% of us will begin the year as failures. Yikes!
Have you heard about a revolutionary idea by authors Mike Ashcraft and Rachel Olsen, called MY ONE WORD? Here’s what they have to say:
“It’s okay to want to be a better you, and the New Year is a natural time to start. The question is how? MY ONE WORD replaces broken promises with a vision for real change. When you choose a single word, you have a clarity and focus. You are moving toward the future rather than swearing off the past.”
… Mike Ashcraft and Rachel Olsen
We all know resolutions can be self-defeating. Ashcraft and Olsen emphasize choosing:
“One word you can focus on every day, all year long… One word that sums up who you want to be or how you want to live. It will take intentionality and commitment, but if you let it, your one word will shape not only your year, but also you. It will become the compass that directs your decisions and guides your steps.”
Ashcraft and Olsen advise picking a word by taking these steps:
- Decide what kind of person you want to be at the end of 2019.
- Visualize the person you want to become. What qualities do they have?
- Resist the temptation to list too many words/characteristics. Commit to just ONE WORD.
I put together a list of words for you to ponder: (Remember pick just one):
Decisive, Forgiving, Assertive, Content, Patient, Accepting, Uplift, Positive, Dream, Grateful, Seek, Declutter, Relax, Abide, Fearless, Disciplined, Balance, Persevere, Pray, Stretch, Surrender, Slow, Connect, Believe, Vigilant, Accept, Intentional, Delight, Pause, Honor, Bold, Courage, Embrace, Sincere, Share, Grace, Focus, Vision, Trust, Laugh, Grow, Wisdom, Patience, Truth, Frugal, Streamline, Conscious, Aware, Generous, Kind, Thoughtful, Technical, Relent, Repent, Rejoice, Explore, Resist, Search, Rest, Sublime, Seek, Express, Curious, Stop, Pause, Consider, Aware, Empathetic, Move, Peace, Faithful, Love, Kindness, Observe, Look, Read, Considerate, Meditate, Joyful, Believe, Bold. Positive, Release, Listen, Purpose, Healthy, Trust, Think, Listen, Release, Act, Persistence, Enough…
“OUR RESOLUTIONS TO CHANGE SELDOM WORK BECAUSE THEY CENTER ON THE TYPE OF PERSON WE REGRET BEING RATHER THAN ON WHO IT IS GOD IS CALLING US TO BECOME. WE NEED VISION, NOT REGRET.” …Mike Ashcraft
Last year my ONE WORD was FOCUS. It was a great word for 2018, but this year I chose another word, based on events and unexpected circumstances that occurred in 2018.
This year my word is GRACE/GRACIOUSNESS.
Everyone’s word will be different and each year your word will change.
I will never forget my year of focus. Now, I turn to a year of grace.
With just a single word, you can take the pressure off yourself. What will your ONE WORD be for 2019?
PLEASE, PLEASE COMMENT BELOW AND LET ME KNOW.

I never make resolutions on New Year because I know I won’t keep them, but
Sharon, I never make resolutions for the new year because I know I won’t keep them. However, by choosing one word, which I will really have to think about, will make it easier for me to keep. Thank you for your wonderful ideas and suggestions. Happy New Year to you and yours and with God’s blessings.
Candice,
Please let me know what word you decide upon. I will be so excited to hear it!
Thank you for writing.
My word is Choice but from your list I may change it to Intentional. I want this year to be more aware of my actions and try to make them an intentional choice.
Nanachel,
Feel free to keep both words. I think they are wonderful together!
Thanks so much for writing.
Love this concept. Ran it by my husband. His word: Improvement. My word: Adventure. We feel that our words are compatible. Thank you for this WONDERFUL idea! And, Happy New Year.
Oh, Pam.
I love how thoughtful you and your husband have been about choosing your words–and such great ones, too! Best wishes for an amazing year!
The first word that came to my mind is productive. I often have goals and projects that remain unfinished throughout the year. If I concentrate on being more productive, perhaps I can enjoy completing more of them. All the best to you, Sharon, in the New Year!
Sherry,
Often the first thoughts that come to mind are the ones that have been harboring in our minds unconsciously. Sounds like a great word to me!
