Three Ways to ELEVATE your Most Casual Looks
January 20, 2021

In last week’s blog, we discovered that lines are blurred when it comes to loungewear vs. athletic vs. leisure wear. Lovely Reader Donna commented, “Gone are the days of pantyhose and heels.” (Yes, Donna. For most this is true. Unless you work in a formal business environment.)

Especially these days, we are all opting for more comfortable and casual clothing. But how can you elevate super-casual looks? Whether you’re wearing sweatpants, jeans, or leggings–bring it to the next style level by adding:

1. A Third-Layer Piece

As we say in our book, QUINTESSENTIAL STYLE: Cultivate and Communicate Your Signature Look, “A third-layer piece ALWAYS takes your outfit to the next level.

What is a third layer piece? A third-layer piece can be a blazer, a denim jacket, a sweater, a poncho, a cardigan, a shawl, or even a hoodie.

Take a look: Imagine these two outfits WITHOUT a third-layer piece–super casual.

But WITH a third-layer piece–SUPER CHIC!

Even T-shirts can get a boost if you add a lightweight jacket or hoodie.

Want to dress up jeans or leggings? Nothing works quite like a third piece.

2. Accessories

We all know how accessories can finish off an otherwise ho-hum outfit. So don’t forget to accessorize even your most casual looks.

Jeans and heels…YES! And a V-neck T looks a lot more stylish with a scarf, earrings, and bangles. Photo credit: Chico’s.

3. Color, Pattern, and Texture

Do I really need to mention how much difference color can make in our wardrobes–no matter what we’re wearing? Don’t limit your leisurewear to black, gray, and white. Neutrals are okay if they are flattering. But, as we more mature gals know, complementary color is always our friend.

“Style can be formal or very casual. But, it’s the personality behind the outfit that makes it quintessentially your own.”

All these photos came from Chico’s latest flyer. It seems their designers know our lifestyles are getting a lot more casual.

Brava, Chico’s.
