To Belt–Or, Not to Belt? That’s the Question
June 18, 2022

Loose, flowy dresses are all the rave this summer. But, what if your dress is a bit too billowy?

The question…To belt, or not to belt?

I’ll use myself as a model to illustrate this point. I loved the color of this dress when I bought it, but it sat in my closet for almost a year before I figured out WHY I never wore it. Take a look:

This oversized, shapeless dress does nothing to compliment my figure. That’s why I never wore it.

I finally figured out this dress needed something…

BINGO…A BELT!

My husband took these photos and said the reason I wasn’t smiling in the first pic, is because I wasn’t wearing a belt!

This belt works for me, because it defines my waist. And, as an accessory, It also adds a bit of interest to the outfit. Which belt do you like best?

Here are some other illustrations of non-belting vs. belting:

This dress from Madewell didn’t have a belt. My daughter got embarrassed when I slipped a belt on the mannequin and snapped this photo to show the difference before and after. (Sorry, Sarah.)

Now, a belt may not be for everyone. Here’s another example from H&M. This red dress came with a tie-belt. You can decide which looks better.

Here are two linen A-line dresses. You decide–to belt or not:

What can a belt do for you (and your outfit):

  • Define your waist
  • Create an empire waist (a fitted bodice that drapes under the bustline, rather than at the natural waistline)
  • Add color, texture, or interest
  • Help petite girls tame a billowy dress that can overwhelm a tiny frame (see below)

Deciding when to add (or delete) an accessory all comes down to personal preference. It’s about how you feel when you look in the mirror.

Tell us how you feel about belting vs. non-belting. (Come on, I showed you my photos–now I’d like your input, please.)

I like all the belt options on your beautiful dress but my favorite is the colorful one that hangs down. Thank you for another great tutorial!

    Sherry,
Yes, that has been the consensus and I agree. I tried every belt in my closet and this sash worked perfectly. Sometimes we have to think “outside the belt!”

Love the tie belt! Gives you a longer leg line…not that you need it….just my preference!

    Marietta,
I agree. You seem to know the concepts of “line and design” well.
Thanks for your input. I always appreciate it.

    Terry,
The sash seems to have gotten the majority of the votes, and I agree.
I have had that sash in my closet for more years than I can count. It came with a pair of white Talbot’s pants, but I never wore it with the pants. Sometimes it does pay to keep things.
    Thanks for writing.

My favorite is the “scarf” belt. I’ve seen a lot of flowy maxi dresses, but I haven’t ever tried one on because they looked too full. I might have to try one. My problem is that I’m long waisted, so most dresses are “empire” on me.

    Janet,
You are so right. Body type makes all the difference.
I needed the belt to define my waist, otherwise it looked a bit blimpy!

    Thanks, Sally,
Would be so hard to explain in words, without photos.

It’s funny because the first thing my model, Lesley said with our dresses today is you couldn’t add a belt. And you know the first thing I want to do is prove her wrong, haha.

    Jodie,
Would love to see the “before belt” and “after belt” photos.

I like the light bright scarf the best. The Brown does not relate to your hair color.
I have an H shape so I would only wear a diagonal belt. Color 1 Assoc.

I took another look, the scarf is at a slight angle, that’s why we all like it for it’s more flattering.
