Two weeks ago I wrote a blog asking readers if they would consider ordering a blouse that was deemed “most loved,” from a certain mail order retailer. My lovely reader Beverly commented that she might check the “M” store first, to see if she could find a similar blouse at a better price.
Following that post, I had ladies asking…”What exactly is the ‘M’ store?”
Of course, you already know…it’s Marshalls. The retail chain (along with sister stores TJ Maxx and Homegoods) that sells brand name clothing, accessories, and decor at discount prices.
But, according to Fairchild Media, Marshalls is not a discount store. TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Homegoods are off-price retailers. This means that most of their stock comes from merchandisers and brands with excess inventory. And as an off-price retailer, Marshalls offers department store-worthy pieces and brand names at low prices, which typically vary from 20-60% off their original retail price.
Marshalls also aims for items to be sold within three weeks, and restocks its shelves three days per week—so timing is everything.
Marshalls doesn’t have coupons, sales, or promotions because the prices already reflect the lowest available cost for items.
So, here’s the Karen Kane ‘most loved’ blouse I ordered. Did I end up keeping it?
In the end, sadly I returned the blouse. Even though I could dress it up or down and I loved the color, I felt it was a little too large, and it resembled something I already had in my closet.
Unfortunately, I didn’t read the fine print on sending it back. (As I suggested we all do before we purchase something online.) I was not able to exchange it for a smaller size AND the return cost me $10 for shipping (after I had already paid for shipping in the first place).
So this is a cautionary tale about buying online.
But, I’m going to keep going to the “M” store to find great deals.
I love Marshalls, not only for their pricing and selection, but, because I can physically see, touch, and try on the clothing before I buy.
I wish you all HAPPY SHOPPING…whether it’s online or in person.

I love the color and the top on you. I’m sorry it was too big.
Accessorizing is everything, It takes an every day outfit and makes it pop.
Shirley,
I agree. The accessories make all the difference!
I prefer to try on clothes but will occasionally order a top or tee shirt. In the past I haven’t had much luck finding anything to fit me at Marshalls but maybe I should give them another try.
Sherry,
I hope you will try Marshalls. Sometimes it’s a hit or miss day, but their stock is constantly changing. Their slogan is true: “You never know what you will find.”
Thanks for writing.
