What Joan Rivers Taught Us About Dressing
March 16, 2018

Does anyone else miss Joan Rivers? Despite what you may have thought of her provacative monologs, you can’t deny Joan Rivers was an amazingly stylish lady. In a recent QVC segment, her longtime friend and co-designer, David Dangle, quoted Joan as saying:

“There is a difference between fashion that is ON-TREND and fashion that is TRENDY.” … Joan Rivers

I agree. There is something exhilarating about seeing a woman ‘of a certain age’ who creatively modernizes her look–even the classics–by infusing the perfect amount of en-vogue styling. She doesn’t buy something of-the-moment simply because it’s of-the-moment. She considers how the trend is going to work with her current wardrobe and lifestyle.

SO HOW CAN WE (As Mature Women) ADAPT TRENDS INTO OUR WARDROBES THIS SPRING?

Trend: THE KIMONO (aka ‘Duster’) – Now is the time for a great transitional topper like a kimono. It’s still cool enough to need a third layer piece, but nothing too heavy. Here are three looks. Tres chic at every age.  (Check out the middle photo.)

Trend: SNEAKERS – No, I do not mean our exercise/running shoes.  I mean an on-trend casual sneaker like the modern version of our beloved Keds.

The silver sparklers are trendy–Gray is more subtle. (But if you’ve always wanted to be Dorothy, I’d go for the glitz.)

Trend: PASTELS – Here’s how the young models wore pastels for the Spring 2018 Runway.

Hot pants and head-to-toe pastels probably aren’t for us.

But look how midlife style bloggers Susan Street and Beth Djalali wear pastels. Anchored with black or casualized with jeans.

On-trend perfection!

Don’t  automatically assume seasonal fashion trends are only for the young. Try incorporating them into your current wardrobe in small ways, and you’ll be amazed how modern you can look.

Remember what Joan said:

Thanks, Joan.
