If any of you happened to see last week’s SAG Awards, you probably noticed a very interesting style trend: necklaces were nowhere to be seen. STATEMENT EARRINGS appeared to be the only jewelry making it down the red carpet.
I’ve written more than a few blogs on layering necklaces. But sometimes, less is more. And a fabulous pair of earrings can definitely take center stage on their own.
Of course if you already have a lot going on at your neck like Nicole Kidman and Kate Hudson, all you need is a little something on your ear.
But Reese, Lupita, and Mandy also opted for ‘EARS ONLY’ to complement their gorgeous gowns.
As did Tracee Ellis Ross and Kristen Bell.
I checked Harper’s Bazaar jewelry trends for 2018. Here’s what I found:
Tassels, balls, color, and texture all make the list.
And leather and feathers have been made popular by ‘Fixer Upper’ star, Joanna Gaines.
Earthy, boho look.
I also saw mismatched earrings on the runway. (Maybe this girl got confused backstage.)
It doesn’t matter if your are wearing a t-shirt or an evening gown, earrings are an inexpensive way to update your look. So add some flair and have some fun.
And don’t worry, if you’ve lost one of your earrings. Even that’s a trend this season!

Never leave the house without my earrrings….
….Lovely to see Joanna Gaines featured.
Adele,
…and lipstick for me! Thanks for writing.
Adele,
Thanks so much for your comment.
Well it’s a good thing I don’t care what the trend is or what others wear! 😁 I will never stop wearing my beautiful necklaces!!! And for sure, there are some outfits that just do not need a necklace!! I have a very short neck so I do not wear the long or very large earrings! So that’s why I love the bigger necklaces! And if I have one of the larger necklaces on I tone down the size of my rings and bracelets also! PS: Whose going to tell Charlie Wharton that necklaces are out of style?
I’m LOL, Hilde.
YOU are a woman who knows herself and her quintessential style! I absolutely love it when women realize that a certain trend is NOT for them. Brava for helping us remember.
What a fun post! I am thrilled that I have something in common with the trend setters for once. My granddaughter made me feather earrings a couple of years ago (she is always up on the latest trends) and I have several sets of earrings that have one missing or broken and now I know I can wear only one! Also I have been known to wear mismatched earrings! One time at work years ago, my boss’s wife came to visit the office. She kept looking at me like something was wrong. Finally she asked me if I knew that my earrings didn’t match! Not being much of a morning person, I had quickly grabbed them and put them on in the dark! On a serious note, I do love necklaces and my husband likes to buy them for me, so you will continue to see me wear them no matter what the style is!
Sherry,
I had to laugh at your fun comment. I don’t know how you responded to your boss’s wife, but you could have told her you meant to wear the two together. Ha.
I bet the reason she inquired is because she was paying close attention to your style.
And you, my dear, are a very lucky woman. Your thoughtful husband sounds like a gem.
I’ve always avoided dangly earrings since I wear glasses. Seems like too much. I do like necklaces, though.
Terry,
My co-author Janna Beatty also wears glasses. I have never seen her without a pair of earrings on…most of them dangly. You might want to give them a try. Have fun experimenting with different lengths. It costs nothing to try them on (or, in this case hold them up to your ears).
I love necklaces, especially if they add color to your outfit. If you ever see me with two different earrings… let me know. I would never do that on purpose. I’m too much of a traditionalist!
Ha ha, Janet. For most of us, mismatched earrings would not be intentional. It would be a sign that we couldn’t remember which earring we had just put on 5 seconds ago!!
