It’s travel season, but your days of overpacking are OVER. Yes, Ladies, OVER! I am going to let you in on the secret to creating 30 stylish looks from 9 pieces of clothing. (And only two accessories.) All of which you can easily fit into one carry-on bag.
Here are the lucky nine garments that get to travel with you! (Oh, and 2 necklaces.)
STEP 1.
Begin with two MATCHING SUITS.
A suit being pants and a jacket (or layering piece like a cardigan, vest, or pashmina) of the same color,
Shown here: IVORY JACKET/PANTS and DENIM JACKET/JEANS.
STEP 2. Choose 5 tops that will complement the pants/jackets.
Diane chose a gingham, a leopard print, a pink sweater, a floral silk charmeuse, and a casual cotton. (All very different, but all will coordinate with navy or ivory.)
STEP 3. Choose 2 Necklaces; each matching the color of your pants.
Ivory Pearl necklace.
Navy (denim) beaded necklace.
Matching necklace to pants will visually PULL our outfits together using a concept called:
BOTTOMS UP!
That’s it. That’s all you have to pack to create 30 outfits:
REMEMBER: Wear the pants (BOTTOMS) that are the same color as your necklace (UP),
I don’t have room to post ALL the photos. But trust me, if you mix these garments up, you will get 30 different looks.
CAPSULE WARDROBE packing list:
- Ivory jacket and pants 2*
- Denim jacket and jeans 2*
- Blouses 5
- Necklaces 2
- TOTAL 11 ( creates 30 outfits)
*Jacket/pants sets can be black, blue, khaki, white, navy, ivory, or any other color.
A huge thank you to our model, beautiful Diane Jordan. And to Janna Beatty for sharing her secret to stylish packing made simple.

Love the tip of matching your necklace to your pants! Thanks!
Jill,
Diane looked quite concerned when Janna took her necklace away. The ‘bottoms up’ concept really works!
Sharon,
You did a wonderful job explaining this wonderful principle! (Thank you for your kind words ❣️)
If someone wants to check this out, make cut outs, colored pieces of paper with words, or colored words on pieces of paper – then make up the different outfits! Maybe a little tedious for some but kind of fun. I’m very visual!
It was a joy working with you, and your photos made me look good😊❣️

Diane,
Thank you for the time you devoted to this project. Visuals are always the best.
I’m leaving on an Alaskan cruise next week so I’m going to attempt Diane’s packing list. But I also have to take hiking boots, waterproof pants (hiking on glaciers) dressy clothes (formal nights) and rain gear. I’m hoping to get this all in 1 and 1/2 suitcases for a 3 week trip. I’ll let you know if I succeed. I did find a really cool scarf with all of my “Light, bright” colors. So I can use that like a piece of jewelry.
Yes, Janet,
A scarf will work just as well as a necklace. You may even want to tie the scarf on your handbag or use it as a cute headband.
Have a great trip!
