Pantone has announced Ultra Violet to be the official color of 2018. The Pantone Color Institute works with companies and designers to help them make the most informed decisions about color for their products and brands. Vivid green was the color choice for 2017, while rose quartz made hue of the year in 2016.
Pantone’s official definition describes ultra violet as “complex and contemplative. Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now.”
Okay — I never really thought a color could be all that, but maybe I haven’t been thinking deeply enough.
Throughout history, purple has been associated with royalty, wealth, and social standing.
Hey, I thought these ladies wore it just because they looked so GREAT in it!
Some may describe violet as ‘cosmic’. But, I just call it fun!
And, while head-to-toe purple may not be for everyone…
These celebrities are sure making it work:
But purple can also be a very scary color:
I do think Pantone’s choice is going to make a lot of little girls happy. Because little girls seem to adore purple.
What about you? What are your thoughts on purple? Love it? Don’t love it? No opinion?

I must be in vogue, or just lucky. I found the prettiest jeweled handbag in the silent auction at the recent Contemporaries fund-raiser. It matched a purple dress that I had in my closet perfectly. Just emailed the photo to you. Betty
What a find, Betty!
If you love purple, this is your year. But I’d wear purple anytime–it’s so much fun!
Great job, Janna!
Yes, Brava, Janna for giving us the real scoop on wearing ultra violet!
Wonderul
Wonderful–I love purple!
Donna,
I happen to like purple, too. It can look sophistocated or fun.
I’m not a purple person at all. The color makes me look ill! Turns me yellow. On the other hand, my sister loves purple.
Terry,
Purple can be a tricky color to wear. As my co-author Janna Beatty says, “Most people have a firm opinion about purple–they either love it or they don’t.
Two of my three grand-daughters are totally enamored with purple. Hopefully there will be lots of cute clothes to choose for them in size Toddler 4 and Girls 6. (I like purple too).
Janet,
I don’t know who these Pantone people are who get to choose ‘color of the year’. I think they should just let the kids decide. Moms usually buy what their kids like. (No market research necessary.)
Loved the interview Janna. Great Job!!! I just might have to add one piece of purple to my wardrobe and and play with it.
I love purple . and wear that color well because I have gray hair. and receive many compliments.
