‘Tis the season for mail order catalogs, ladies. I don’t consider them a nuisance, because they are a quick guide into the newest style offerings. And it is, after all, the season for boots.
Boots can be pricey, so choose a pair you love and you know you will get your money’s worth out of. A quick guide to boot-buying includes the same concept as shoe-buying that Janna recommends in our book, QUINTESSENTIAL STYLE. That is, “One of the best boot (shoe) colors to OWN is one that matches your hair color. That way, the boots go WITH YOU, so they will automatically go with whatever else you are wearing.” Simple.
The Stylists All Know This Trick
Take a look at every photo I found in the most recent Soft Surrounding catalog. These ensembles are curated by professional stylists who are trained to know how to put outfits together. You see it in a catalog–it looks fantastic, but do you know WHY?
Can you figure out what all these gals have in common that create their elevated looks?
(Hint: I just told you.)
Of course you can figure it out. All of the models above have on footwear that is the same color as their HAIR!
So obvious, yet so overlooked. In fact, I never knew this concept until I wrote the book with Janna 13 years ago. Now, it is always a consideration when I purchase footwear.
(Note: the next best thing to owning a pair of shoes that matches your hair color is a nude pair that matches your skin tone.)
Here are some other outfits (also from Soft Surroundings) that illustrate the same idea.
Actually, the beanie hat goes with the sneakers, but I thought I’d throw that in just to prove a point.
And, yes, ladies with silver hair–this concept also applies to you:
So, remember this tip from QUINTESSENTIAL STYLE.
Pretty soon you will begin to notice this concept everywhere you look.
HAPPY BOOT BUYING TO ALL MY LOVELY READERS!

Hi Sharon I have always agreed on hair color for shoe color, but now I’m struggling. I am graying in the front but the back and sides of my hair are a medium brown. What am I supposed to do with that as my hair color for shoes? Thanks for your consideration.
Cynthia,
I’d go with whatever hair color is dominant right now as someone is facing you. But, truly either would work. Such a good question. Thanks for writing.
Interesting! Never thought about this. Thank you! Have a Happy Thanksgiving.
Nikki,
Sometimes we see outfits that are truly outstanding, but we can’t pinpoint WHY they look so good. When an accessory complements your natural coloring (eye coloring, hair coloring), it will always work.
Happy holidays!
