Ladies, I am so excited to see the “modern prep” style en vogue this season. I don’t necessarily follow trends–only the ones that fit my lifestyle and aesthetic, but I do LOVE preppy elements, so I know I’m going to enjoy shopping these looks.

You’re sure to remember some of the preppy separates from the 80’s including: sweater vests, collared shirts, blazers, midi skirts, corduroy, tweeds and plaids, turtlenecks, and loafers–to name a few. YIPPEE!
OKAY, maybe this look is not for everyone, but you can pick and choose elements that you love. (If you’re lucky, you may even have some tucked away in your closet from a couple of decades ago. Yes, I confess, I have one or two Ralph Lauren button down shirts I have never parted with.)
How to create a MODERN PREP Look:
- Layer cardigans and sweater vests under a blazer
- Mix textures like tweed, suede, and corduroy
- Pull out accessories like scarves and pearls and wear with a chambray shirt
But don’t be stiff–this is not “country club” dressing. Today’s prep style is more about individualizing your look with pattern, color, and texture. It’s not your average navy blazer and white button down shirt.
Be creative! In photos below, a striped Breton shirt is mixed with a plaid blazer. And loafers are worn with skinny jeans.

Some of my favorite stores to shop preppy include Talbot’s, Banana Republic, and J Crew.

If you are not sure how to dress prep after 50, click on this excellent article by AARP Magazine to guide you.
How did the Prep Style Begin?
“The preppy style originated around 1900-1930 when wealthy families sent their children to private preparatory schools that funneled students into Ivy League colleges. The schools had strict dress codes that emphasized tidy conservative, sporty attire. Hallmarks of this look included: button-down Oxford shirts, khakis, navy blazers, Shetland sweaters, and loafers.”

Isn’t it funny how fashion trends come about?
Some of you may remember my post from 2018 on Wearing White after Labor Day That concept also originated with the upper class dictating that white was only acceptable to wear during summer months. (Of course, these folks had money for both summer houses and completely new seasonal wardrobes.)

Here are some photos from the historic Bedford Springs Omni hotel. I just wonder how these women could keep their long dresses clean (and perspiration-free) while walking and exploring the dusty hills during hot and humid Pennsylvania summers.
But, I digress.
I hope you will have fun shopping in your closet. I bet you can find button-down shirts, loafers, cardigans, scarves and so much more to help you achieve this classic look.
Cheers! Sharon
