Gauchos vs. Culottes…Is there really a difference?
September 6, 2015

Culottes__6_-2Is it just me, or is anyone else excited to see the comeback of gaucho pants? Or is it culottes? Whatever they are called, I just love them. To me, they are the perfect fusion of practicality and  flirtiness. They look strong, yet feminine and can be worn so many stylish ways.

What’s in a name?

Gauchos are wide, calf-length trousers modeled after the pants worn by South American gauchos (cowboys). They usually have a high waist cut and are loosely tapered from the thigh until a few inches below the knee. Gauchos have been fashionable for women since the 1950’s, when ladies wanted a little more room for their legs, while maintaining some sense of style.

Señor Gaucho — great look!

Culottes are described as women’s trousers, usually knee or calf length. They have a full cut to resemble a skirt. They hang like a skirt, but are actually pants.

During the Victorian Era (mid-to-late 19th century), divided skirts (bifurcated skirts) were developed for horseback riding, and later provided women more freedom for activities like gardening, cleaning, and bike riding. Culottes had the functionality of pants, while still looking like dresses.

Look how far we have come, since the days of Queen Victoria.

Don’t think I’ll be gardening in these.

Yes, these are culottes!

Culottes are a good choice when transitioning from sizzling summer to crisp, cool fall.

Flats, heels, boots, or sandals. Dressy, casual, or sporty. A little longer, a little shorter…it’s up to you.  So chic, so wearable. That’s why I love those ‘whatchamacallits.’

Please write a comment (below) and tell us how you wear your gauchos. Or if you have questions about styling, send them on. We’d love to hear from you.

I have a pair of cuffed black gauchos. I’m always unsure what to wear with them. Should it be a structured and not flowy kind of top? And would they look good with tall boots? I always feel like I should wear some kind of heel with them.

Sometimes gauchos can be tricky. If the gauchos are wide-legged, keep the top closer to the body.
I prefer shorter jackets or cardigans.
Wearing boots the same color as the gauchos will give you a long, slim line–as illustrated by the model wearing the hat.
Janna says as far as shoes are concerned: Your full length mirror will not lie. Put a different choice on each foot and your answer will come clearly into focus.

I have some gauchos in my closet from when they were popular years back. Now I’m glad I saved them because they do look good and provide another alternative to skirts or pants. Dress them up or down. I saved the best fitting ones – glad they are back!! Wish Id saved pictures of what I wore with them :-)) !! I appreciate your confirmation of what I thought I was seeing as a gaucho come-back! Thank you!

I’m a fan of culottes, even if I had no idea they’re called like that till a minute ago. Cropped pants are a chic alternative to classic tailoring and can work for any occasion, so what’s not to like?

They’re just a bit tricky to style, ideal for a perfectionist that doesn’t want to draw excessive attention.
