My “Tour de Closet”
March 1, 2015

This post has very few words, but a lot of photos.  I’m not sure if the transformation in my closet could actually be considered “life-changing,” but it certainly made my dressing experience speedier, more enjoyable, and much less frustrating. Well, maybe that DOES constitute life-changing. See for yourself.

My closet--before.
My closet…before.
My closet...after
My closet…after.

I splurged on slimline, non-slip hangers. They take up less room and keep everything looking uniform.

Before…winter sweater boxes on the floor.

Sweater boxes stowed. I even have room for a chair, so I can sit down and put on my Spanx.
After…sweater boxes stowed and everything off the floor. I even have room for a chair, so I can sit down and put on my Spanx.

Turn the corner...before.
Turn the corner…before.
Turn the corner...after.
Turn the corner…now.  (To the right, my pink pj’s and robe hang on a peg, so I don’t have to go searching for them every night.)

I still have lots of shoes, but the ones I don’t wear very frequently are at the back of the closet.

Here are shoes I wear most often. Right in front, where I need them.

I put two nested two handbags in this tote. Even Charley was amazed!
I  nested two handbags inside this tote as suggested by Marie Kondo.  What a space-saver… Even my dog Charley was amazed!

I tend to take off my jewelry and just dump it on the dresser.  Now, I place it on this small ceramic tray.  When the tray gets full, I know it’s time to put things away.

I found this decorative mesh-metal apple at Tuesday Morning.  I’m using it to hang all my wire earrings.  This can probably hold 200 pair, and best of all they are easy to find.

IMG_1567My t-shirt drawer was stuffed, so I followed the advice of Marie Kondo–folding everything and placing it in the drawer on its side. Wow…what a difference.

Of course, we all have to customize our closets according to our own specific needs. I wear a lot of skirts and not many dresses, so I transformed a single, high-hanging rack, into two shorter hanging spaces.

You can get this double hanging rod for $14.99 at Bed, Bath & Beyond.  Just be sure to reinforce it once you put it together. I used extra duct tape on the ends, because if you don’t, this could happen to you

…like it did to me.

And that’s the story of my closet. I still own a lot of stuff, but I also got rid of a lot of stuff.  Now I can really see what stuff I have. I am discovering clothes I totally forgot about and I’m falling back in love with them…Just like Janna says.

It really is amazing and inspirational. A good closet cleaning has been on my “to do” list since I read “Q – Style” but now I see it is going to the top of the list. I do wish my closet was as large as your, but regardless, I MUST start cleaning it out! Thanks for the photos, ideas, and motivation!! You are a brave woman to “bare your closet” to everyone!!

    Diane,
I have had so much feedback from this blog. I think it is a universal dilemma. Good luck on getting it done, dear friend.

It takes time, Donna. Don’t be discouraged. Janna recommends working in the early hours, when your energy level is highest. Good Luck!

Yes, Mary, I never knew it either until I read Marie Kondo’s book.
    You said it…genius!
