What basic garment can go from beach, to work, to evening, to school, to baseball game? Answer: (Okay, I gave it away in the heading.) It’s the amazing TANK DRESS.
I recently purchased a jersey knit tank dress, because it was cool, colorful, and comfortable. Little did I realize that this dress would become the workhorse of my summer wardrobe.
The versatility of a tank dress is unbelievable. I have worn it:
- Under a t-shirt, where the dress served as a skirt.
- Over a t-shirt, where the dress served as a jumper.
- As a bathing suit cover-up.
- With a long lace cardigan (dressy).
- With a short cotton cardigan (casual).
- With a jean jacket.
- With a scarf.
- With a colorful kimono.
- With a beaded shawl.
- With a white button-down shirt (tied or untied)

This dress is flattering on every body type. It looks best when it glides over the body, but doesn’t cling. You may have to go up a size to get the best fit. (And yes, I still wear my SPANX underneath so everything smooths out.)
Short or long, belted or unbelted, with a hat, bangles, pearls, or gold hoops. With sandals, espadrilles, flats, or flip-flops. The combinations are infinite.
Roll it up, stow it in your suitcase with all the accessories you can find, and this one simple garment can take you anywhere you want to go.
The tank dress just might be the best travel companion you ever had.
Bon voyage.
