In our book Quintessential Style, we discuss the “power of the jacket.” But today we are going to talk about another concept: the “third piece.” What is it? And how can it upgrade the look of any outfit.
Rumor has it that retailers like Nordstrom and Banana Republic began implementing the third piece rule in their training sessions to help their associates achieve a more refined, stylish appearance.* All I know is 12 years ago, when we published QUINTESSENTIAL STYLE: CULTIVATE AND COMMUNICATE YOUR SIGNATURE LOOK, we wrote, “A third-layer piece ALWAYS takes your outfit to the next level.”
What is a third layer piece?

A third layer piece is an extra garment added to a basic two piece outfit (top + bottom, or dress) that adds the final finishing touch. It is meant to create a more complete, stylish, and intentional look by adding texture, color, or personality. Third layer pieces include: (In order, most formal to most casual)
- Blazer
- Denim jacket
- Cardigan
- Vest
- Poncho
- Shawl or kimono
- Shirt jacket (shacked)
- Hoodie
- A scarf, hat, or statement jewelry can even be considered a “third piece”
Imagine these basic outfits without a third piece. They are, well, simply basic.
Complete your look with a shacket or a denim jacket.

This jumper goes next level with cardigan slung over shoulders (and belt).

A vest is a great third piece that adds style without bulk.

In warmer days, a shawl or kimono adds panache to this jeans outfit.

Even a simple hoodie can upgrade your outfit–although this cutie doesn’t need a thing.

With today’s more casual lifestyles, our goal might be to upgrade our everyday look, to appear more polished and put together. How to do it: Add a third piece.

So ladies, try this simple trick of adding a third piece to your basic top/bottom. Once you see the difference, it will become second nature every time you get dressed.
*I actually checked with a Nordstrom employee I know (thank you, Heather), and discovered that Nordstrom does encourage their employees to add a third piece to their ensembles for a more polished, professional look.

Nice!!
Nikki,
It is a simple concept that you may already know, but good to be reminded of.
This is easy to do in Fall and Winter because it’s cooler and the third piece helps keep you warm. I struggle with th third piece in summer when we don’t need the extra warmth.
Janet,
A lightweight fabric kimono is a good option for summer. Gives arm coverage for sleeveless tops. It will also help in air conditioned settings.
