What a “Devil” Can Teach Us About Style
July 1, 2017

Remember the movie, The Devil Wears Prada? Meryl Streep won a Golden Globe in 2007 for her portrayal of the ruthless–yet fashionable–magazine editor, Miranda Priestly.  It’s been over 10 years, and this film still manages to offer up some timeless, style takeaways:

V-Necks are Universally Flattering – Everyone can benefit from wearing the elongating V-neck. Remember, elongating = slimming, whether you’re talking about your neck or your entire silhouette.

Sometimes all you need is a Statement Earring – If you have a fabulous neckline, let that be the focal point of your outfit. Don’t ‘fuss it up’ with a necklace, when all that’s needed is a great pair of earrings. (Try this “ears only” tip when wearing the current off-the shoulder trend.)

Or…

A stunning neckline with “Ears Only.”

A jacket always says, “I’m powerful” – You don’t have to lose your femininity when you wear a jacket. Notice Miranda’s earrings and (again) V-neck collared blouse. Feminine, yet authoritative.

Incorporate Color using Accessories – The repetition of red used here with both a belt and a necklace really “pulls this look together.”

Matching Handbag to Hair Always Works (I’m beginning to sound like a broken record.)

Sunglasses and a Trench Coat Create “Instant” Chic

Timeless Jewelry is Oh-so-Sophistocated – Classic pieces like pearls and hoop earrings never go out of style.

It only goes to show, that even horrible bosses can teach us something.

Well, I guess…

Such a fun post! And The Devil Wears Prada is definitely one of my desert island movies. Every six months or so, I interrogate my hair colorist, asking the same question: when can you give me Miranda Priestly hair?! I did notice that today’s Miranda would never wear a necklace and belt in the same color family. Oh the relentless onward march of fashion.

    Mithra,
I saw an interview with TDWP costume designer Patricia Field, and she said if this movie were filmed today, she would have incorporated jumpsuits into Miranda’s wardrobe. I can totally see that!

Love this post, Sharon. Fun and enlightening at the same time. I loved the movie, and especially enjoyed all the fashion. You’ve given me a new reason to watch it, yet again. 🙂 Thank you!

    Judy,
I just saw a post by Beth Djalali (Style at a Certain Age) where Beth is wearing a gold belt, gold hoops, and aviators with gold rims. Just goes to prove that classic design concepts never go out of style.

    Diane,
I remember watching this movie with my girls when they were teenagers. Something for everyone!
