What I’ve learned from Downton Abbey
October 9, 2019

If you are a fan of Downton Abbey, you’ve probably already seen the dazzling new movie now showing in theatres. The continuation of the era of a family we all love. The movie does not disappoint.

In 2016 I wrote a blog about “What I learned from Downton.” I thought I would post it again.

2016: “So I began thinking. After spending over 50 hours of my life watching this PBS phenomenon, have I actually taken away anything of substance?”

As a matter of fact, I have:

1. If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.

cant say

2.  An apology goes a long way. Asking for forgiveness can soothe so many situations.

3. Try to be as loyal to your pets, as they are to you.

4. No one wants to hear you complain.

5. No one likes a braggart or a martyr. Be humble.

6. Everything we possess is only temporary.

7.  There’s always something in life we must deal with.

8. We must embrace change and flow with it.

9. Be grateful for small gifts every day.

10. It’s not ‘things’ that matter most–it’s relationships.

During a recent interview with Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary) in Parade Magazine, the beautiful and insightful actress said, “One of my favorite lines (from Downton Abbey) is:

“All we can do is travel hopefully.”

Golly, I have learned a lot.

PLEASE TELL US WHAT DOWNTON ABBEY HAS MEANT TO YOU, AND WHAT WISDOM YOU HAVE TAKEN AWAY.

I wish Downton Abbey could have gone on and on! 🙂 The only one of the “lessons learned” that I’m having trouble with is “We must embrace change and flow with it.” I think at my age, 80, that that is easier said than done! Especially now, when there are so many changes! I DO love the computer though, but I kinda wish there was no Facebook! haha And I frequent it every day! But it’s easier for people to make nasty comments! I’ve always said “why can’t we all just get along?!” Coming from an Irishman, “May love and laughter light your days, and warm your heart and home…”

    Hilde,
You are “traveling hopefully,” as Mary would say. I believe that means being grateful, no matter what life brings. Thanks for being an inspiration to all of us!

I loved Downton Abbey as well and rewatched all the seasons again this summer before seeing the movie. I thought the movie was great and hope they will do another one someday. The dowager countess continued to deliver her brilliant one liners, which was one of my favorite parts of the show. Yes, I agree there was plenty of substance to justify spending all those hours and I was richly entertained in the process.

    Sherry,
We laughed at the Dowager’s one-liners, but along with wit, there was brilliant wisdom there.
I’m so glad Julian Fellowes continued on with the saga.

    Josephine,
As a British woman, I hope you know how much we love everything that happens across the pond. You have a lot of wisdom to share. And to my readers, if you haven’t seen Josephine’s brilliant website “Chic at Any Age.” Please tune in.
