Do you recall the days when you owned a pair of white Keds sneakers? Ah, the simplicity of youth. Well, sneakers are still stylish in a BIG way. On a recent trip to Italy, I saw everyone of every age wearing them. Not only are they comfortable, but they are also stylish and YOUTHFUL. And, you can wear them with just about everything.

Yes, I said EVERYTHING. Even dresses.
“Oh, they’d look too casual and even shabby,” you say. But, I beg to differ. Take a look at these stylish outfits that all begin with a great pair of sneakers:

Midlife bloggers have been donning sneakers for years. I’m sure you’ll remember:
Susan Blakely from her popular blog une femme d’un certain age.

Or Josephine Lalwan, of Chic at Any Age: Shown here wearing a jersey maxi dress and white sneakers.

Here’s a picture from Pinterest illustrating how to wear a simple tiered, jersey dress four different ways. Including with sneakers.

I found this belted, striped shirt dress at Walmart for only $36. This is the kind of casual dress that would look awesome with a pair of sneakers.
And here’s a snapshot of a cotton dress I own–dressed up one way with sandals and a belt, then casualized with sneakers (and no belt).

Think of all the versatile ways you can wear your sneakers. They aren’t just for athletics anymore. “Comfort’ is the key word here. But, chic is just an added bonus.

Yes, sneakers are everywhere here and in Europe. I think they look great on others, but I just can’t get used to wearing them with dresses. At least not yet.😀
Sharon,
I do think you have to feel comfortable with the combination, and the right dress makes a difference. I hope you’ll experiment with things you already own. You just might find a perfect pairing!
Thanks for writing.
The “keds” shoes are cute. There are lots of options that are take-offs that are also cute. I bought a pair 2 years ago. They were very cute… but they were not comfortable. (They were Taos brand which is sold as a comfy shoe). I wore them a few times and then, donated them to a thrift store. I have foot problems (arthritis and plantar fasciitis) and have to wear shoes with an elevated heel and a rigid sole. I wish I could wear the cute sneakers, but I’m at a point in my life where comfort is a higher priority than style. I’m jealous of people that can wear cute shoes.
Janet,
Completely understand. Comfort is first and foremost.
Thanks for your comment.
Sneakers with a dress??? Not for me….but they look comfortable. Sandals with a great pedicure look so much better😊
Beverly,
I agree– sandals with a great pedi look good anytime. But, you might be surprised how sleek and sporty a dress and sneakers can be. Thanks for writing.
I wear sneakers with dresses, especially in the spring and summer. There are so many sneaker styles. Give it a try.
Shirley,
Thanks for writing. I agree. Sometimes it’s good to think outside the shoe box. It’s worth a try on in our own closets!
