Holiday Decorating Ideas from a Yuletide Home Tour
November 21, 2019
I get design ideas from magazines like Traditional Home.

What’s so fascinating about seeing other people’s homes? Magazines like Southern Living, Better Homes and Gardens, and Traditional Home have all made a business out of it. (Not to mention, Chip & Joanna Gaines and the HGTV network.)

When we peek into other people’s homes, it’s like looking at a snapshot of their lives. It’s their style–it’s “who they are.”

Recently, I helped with the Second Annual “Yuletide Stroll” here in Temple, Texas. The event raises money for our local Children’s Museum.

If you read my blog last year, one of my good friends, opened her spectacular Mediterranean-style home for the tour. (Click Here to view.)

Home tour (2018).

This year, I had the opportunity to see several other host houses. Each home was singular– and displayed the personality and the style of the families living there. Here are some of my best takeaways:

Glamour & Whimsy

Not everything has to be symmetric…

This gorgeous mantel decor is placed off-center and creates amazing interest. (It can also hide an unsightly cord or plug.)

Or, red and green.

Gold, cream, and accents of red–Brilliant!

Add a bit of Whimsy…Everywhere.

On your bed…
By your sofa…
On your chair…
Even at the bar. (My favorite)

Classic

Use Sentimental Holiday Items.

In the entryway, the homeowner framed a jigsaw puzzle of a holiday Snow Village. A foretaste of her collection inside.

Decorate in “Threes.”

The rule of decorating in “threes” applies to holiday decorating, too. (Also, vary your heights.)

Light Adds So Much.

Light in the art, candles, tree and below in the holiday village all contribute to this “snowy” vignette.

Hang a Wreath Anywhere.

The homeowner added a wreath to her heirloom headboard.

Casual & Cozy

Use what you have and just add a pillow, a poinsettia, or greenery.

What could be more inviting than a red couch–that lives here all year long.
Be sure to include the entire family.

Put your own personality into your decor…and make it your “quintessential” holiday home.

Please let us know how you put the “merry” in your decorating. We love hearing from you!

My favorite adage.

My sincere thanks to homeowners: Susan Fergus, Carrice Wunsch, and Jennifer Graham.
